Market Research For An Estonian Wearable Technology Startup

Our team researched the mask and filter market for a wearable technology startup in Estonia.

Respiray is a European technology company that develops and manufactures wearable devices. It came out of Ldiamon, a research and development company with more than fifteen years of building medical applications, and it is funded by Ldiamon and private investors including Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn.

The company started in early 2020, when COVID hit, and launched its first wearable air purifier in February 2021 as protection against airborne viruses. That product picked up recognition including the Financial Times and Seedstars Challenge Top 30 Health Start-Up 2021 and the Healthcare Innovation World Cup 2021. The second product, Wear A+, is aimed at airborne allergens such as pet dander, dust, pollen and mold; it took over two years and 117 prototypes and launched in January 2023.

Our client needed the mask and filter segment described well enough to carry a government grant application. We sized the planned market for the product, named the main market and the partners in it, and set out the main customers and competitors.

The research covered demand for respiratory protective equipment in healthcare, where infectious hazards such as SARS, Ebola and MERS drive it, and in occupational settings across mining, construction, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Geographically it ran across Europe and the United States, with France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Czechia looked at one by one.

The work ran from May 2021 to January 2023.
